Follow-Up:
I am not going to tell you that I have done "serious research" regarding any association between melatonin and Sleep Paralysis. However, I will state this: I have found a huge number of sites that present data on using melatonin to correct sleep disorders. Currently (at least in the USA) melatonin in available in 1mg and 3mg dose forms. Research now indicates that 1mg is too much melatonin. These studies are stating that one-tenth of the usual dosage (0.1 - 0.3mg) is as effective for treating sleep disorders, but these doses do not seem to be associated with the side effects that have been previously listed by studies of people using melatonin. There seems to be a very direct dose-dependent relationship between melatonin and side effects (including sleep paralysis, induction of severe depression, respiratory depression, inability to awaken easily, over-sleeping, etc.) And a dosage of 6mg of Melatonin is basically abusing this compound. Luckily, no addictive qualities have been associated with melatonin. But the "two is better than one" mentality about medications, especially medications used to treat sleep disorders, is dangerous to the person taking the dose and to the other members of the household (dozing off while smoking a cigarette for example). Melatonin is not manufactured in the US in 6mg strenght, and melatonin products all state that 3mg is the maximum daily dose. If someone decides to treat him/herself with a dose that exceeds the recommended dose (whether Rx or OTC)I don't want to hear about the side effects ... rather, I'd encourage the person to seek treatment for possible psychological and/or physical addiction to sleep induction medications.
