I have been taking 5mg of meletonin for 5 years now virtually non stop and it has had no effect on me whatsoever. It does not help me sleep nor does it keep me awake. I am 54 and extremely healthy in every way, I sugest that if you are in your early 40s you take 3mg and under 40 nil. If you feel drowsy the next morning you have taken too much. Women have taken 250mg per day as a means of birth control with no ill effect and at that level no drowsiness. read The Melatonin Miracle by Regalson if you really want the answeres.
