Question: I am looking for advice about the transition from dexedrine to modafinil. My narcolepsy was diagnosed in my teens. When ritalin had little effect, dexedrine was prescribed. I've been taking it for more than 30 years. Although I cannot point with certainty to any negative impact from all those amphetamines, it is hard to imagine that there haven't been any. So, the prospect of a switch to modafinil is attractive. But... 1. I am apprehensive about the transition phase. Could someone with first hand experience offer some insights. I'm thinking about my body's "dependence" on amphetamines. Years ago, my brother was an all out speed freak and his withdrawal was not a pretty sight... I am also interested in how long it might take to get a stable and accurate indication of how the modafinil is working. In other words, how long till the amphetamine- and amphetamine -reaction residue has worked its way out of my system so that an accurate reading on the effects of modafinil is possible. If possible, I'd like to hear from clinicians who have monitored dexedrine/modafinil transitions as well as individual narcoleptics who have experienced same. 2. Cost. I've seen the numbers ... wow. I have partial coverage for medications, but am concerned about the attitude of insurance companies to a drug which is not actually on the market yet. 3. Any information on contra-indications for modafinil and other medications, e.g. for blood pressure and cholesterol control. I'll be grateful for any and all help. Thank you. Cam Morton
