Follow-Up: I did get my SSA disability, on narcolepsy, the first time I applied. I was never referred to any of their physicians, I did not have to acquire an attorney, and my benefits did go retroactive. However, I had already gone through the Voc Rehab, where I was advised to lie about the condition. I followed their expert advice and was soon fired FOR NARCOLEPSY. This transpired 3-4 months prior to the American with Disabilities Act becoming effective. (I just recently found out about that part, though.) I am in the state of South Carolina too. In 1990, the SSA did not even have an adequate, let alone an accurate description of narcolepsy. The closest description they had was for epilepsy...based solely on verbage, wordage, or whatever you want to call it. Perhaps I was lucky, then again, maybe not. Now would anyone like to discuss the Department of Social Services?
