Follow-Up: I no longer take St. John's because it gave me an annoying case of "Restless Leg Syndrome." I took a modest 500 mg. per day for about two months. It made me more confident, less anxious, more focused and slightly more productive. I am not clinically depressed--just curious. I'm a medical writer. I started to get the "twitchies" at night: chronic, involuntary muscular contractions that caused me to lose sleep. I was getting them every night. I did some investigating. Sure enough, serotinin reuptake inhibitors can cause restless leg syndrome. (See restless leg syndrome society web site). I recently read about a guy who is on a s.r.i. for his heart condition. He, too started getting the night twitchies. About 3-4 days after I stopped taking St. John's, the restless leg syndrome vanished. I would like to keep taking St. John's, but that particular side-effect is just not worth it.
