Follow-Up: Follow-Up: I have had a lot of trouble with this, here are a few things that have helped: Excercise: do aerobic and/or weights all the time though think "lips closed teeth open" if you still clench poke your tongue betwween your front teeth (warning do not do this if suffer from involuntary spasms I don't want you to bite your tongue off. Be aware of any medication you are on: I was on Anti depressants for a year 1 week after starting the treatment my recurring TMJ problem re occured, what followed was a long argument with the medical world on whether or not this was a side effect of the drugs (do a search for zoloft or sertraline and bruxism and see what you think!) This is NOT a reported side effect of these medications despite their being significant anecdotal evidence to the contrary. Now take that a bit further, if it is not a listed side effect of SSRIs then what else has been missed, (remember a lot of people are not even aware they do Brux which makes the chances of the FDA picking up a link even more dicey than it is already.) Personally I came off Sertraline (and had to deal with THAT shit) and the symptoms substantially reduced, I am not convinced SSRIs are as safe as we are lead to believe, I worry the may lead to parkinson type symtoms, they seem to exhibit a lot of the same side effects to heavy tranquilisers which they prescribed for years not realising that the side effects were long term and very debilitating. Anyway if you don't want to come of antidepressants I have heard that supplementing with buspar can reduce the Bruxing symptoms. Chat with your physician, if he is not open to the suggestion , get a new one. Temporary relief without a splint: Can't remember where I picked up this Gem but get an eraser and cut 2 1/4 inch thick blocks and sit them under your back molars, you can shove them to the side when you need to talk but this should help most people who would be helped by splint repositioning. DO NOT SLEEP WITH THESE IN. (common sense but you never know! I get significant relief with infra sound devices available from counters, these are basically small massage devices but they are good for this sort of thing as they generally have a small enough head to get round the muscles in the face. Look at your posture seriously and attempt to correct poor posture as this can aggrevate the condition, (Bruxing and TMD) I have heard of a device which basically involves putting 2 small plastic bags filled with unpleasant tasting liquid (you know Mustard and horseradish or Mountain Dew, that kind of stuff!) When you Brux you rupture the bag and wake up replace the bag and go back to sleep. I can't find anyone who makes such a device but it could be a decent home project for some of the more Chronic Noicturnal Bruxers amongst you, if anyone has a decent way of doing this and any feedback on it, post it please and share the love! Long post, I know I'll keep an eye on the board of if you have any suggestions/comments mail me direct. Be aware, the first marketing company that attempts to sell me something will be hunted down and chewed to death with my extremely well devoloped masticators!
