Application Procedures
Applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship are requested to submit letters of recommendation, graduate transcripts, and other material related to their predoctoral training. In addition, an essay detailing their interest in this specific Training Program will be required and any sleep-related activities or research that they may have carried out will be evaluated. Application forms may be obtained from the office of the National Multi-Site Training Program for Basic Sleep Research.
Admissions Procedures
All Faculty of the Training Program evaluate all applicants. Applications must be received by January 1st of each year. They will be reviewed in the spring with funding to commence in the fall. A waiver of this deadline and an advanced funding date may be granted under special circumstances.
Course Work
It is anticipated that postdoctoral applicants will have had prior exposure to the basic principles of neuroscience and sleep research. However, the Faculty will identify possible deficiencies in prior training and, when appropriate, design an academic program to correct such deficiencies. Although postdoctoral trainees at UCLA are not permitted to enroll in and receive credit for courses, they can audit any course on an informal basis, even to the extent of taking exams. Similar opportunities for course work for postdoctoral trainees exist at all Training Program universities.
Laboratory Work
Postdoctoral trainees will be able to carry out research at any one or combination of the laboratories participating in this Training Program. If none of the Training Program laboratories represents the best match for the applicant's interests, other laboratories may be recruited to fill the trainee's specific needs. In addition, should a postdoctoral student wish to learn a technique that is not available in the host laboratory, arrangements will be made for a short sojourn at an appropriate site to learn the particular technique of interest.
