Predoctoral Program

Application Procedures

Applicants for a predoctoral fellowship should apply to the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Ph.D. Program at UCLA. In addition, they are required to submit a statement describing their reasons for wishing to enter the field of sleep research and receive training under the auspices of this Training Program. Application forms may be obtained from the office of the National Multi--Site Training Program for Basic Sleep Research.

Admissions Procedures

Applications for a predoctoral fellowship are first evaluated by the Admissions Committee of the UCLA Interdepartmental

Neuroscience Ph.D. Program. In addition, applicants must be accepted by the UCLA Advisory Committee on Sleep, which is comprised of the Faculty of the Training Program who are located at UCLA. Applications must be received by January 1st of each year.

Course Work

Predoctoral fellows must follow the program of study of the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Ph.D. Program. In addition, they are required to participate in a variety of special sleep programs (see below).

Laboratory Work

Although course y/work will be undertaken at UCLA, it is expected that the trainee's research will be performed in the laboratory of the member of the Training Program whose research most closely accords with the trainee's interests. Laboratory work must conform to all standards set by the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Ph.D. Program. All predoctoral students will select one member of the UCLA Advisory Committee on Sleep as their "in-residence mentor", to serve in this capacity until the Chairperson of their doctoral committee is chosen.

For those students who carry out their doctoral research at UCLA, the Chairperson of their doctoral committee will be a member of the UCLA Advisory Committee on Sleep. For those students who choose to carry out their research in a laboratory outside of UCLA, the Director of the off-site laboratory will serve as Co-Chairperson of the student's doctoral committee, the other Co-Chairperson being one member of the UCLA Advisory Committee on Sleep. Students may also carry out their doctoral research in a laboratory that is not part of this Training Program, if their particular area of interest is not within the expertise of the current Training Program laboratories.

Special Sleep Programs

A series of special programs are provided for predoctoral trainees. There is a Survey Course on Sleep, a Sleep Seminar Series, a Training Program in Sleep Disorders, and a Laboratory Visitation Program. Participation in the annual meeting of the Association of Professional Sleep Societies and attendance at an annual one-week Summer Sleep Workshop at Lake Arrowhead, California, are also required.
